Why is Palestine fighting Israel? It's one of the most searched questions about this conflict, and it's usually asked as if the fighting started out of nowhere. It didn't. What's happening today is the continuation of a struggle that began with the loss of a homeland, and has never been resolved.
Here is the factual history behind the question.
It Starts With Occupation, Not a Random Conflict
Palestine is not fighting Israel over nothing. At the center of this conflict is military occupation. Since 1967, Israel has occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and, until 2005, Gaza directly. The United Nations and the International Court of Justice have both stated that this occupation violates international law, including the continued expansion of Israeli settlements on Palestinian land, which most of the world considers illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
Gaza, while no longer directly occupied on the ground since 2005, has lived under an Israeli blockade by land, air, and sea since 2007, controlling what enters and leaves, including food, fuel, and medical supplies. Human rights organizations, including the UN, have described conditions in Gaza as amounting to collective punishment of an entire population.
This is the daily reality Palestinians are resisting: checkpoints, blockade, settlement expansion, home demolitions, and restricted movement in what was, and legally still is, recognized by most of the world as Palestinian land.
The Root Cause Goes Back to 1948
To understand why this resistance exists at all, you have to go back further than any single year of fighting. In 1948, roughly 750,000 Palestinians were displaced from their homes and land during the Nakba, the catastrophe, when the State of Israel was created. More than 500 Palestinian villages were destroyed. Millions of their descendants remain refugees today, still denied the right to return to the land their families were forced from.

Palestinians Are Fighting for Self Determination
At its core, this is a fight for something the international community claims to support everywhere else: the right of a people to govern themselves, live freely on their own land, and determine their own future without military occupation. Palestinians have built the institutions of a state, are recognized by the majority of the world's countries, and hold observer status at the UN, yet still live under occupation, blockade, and restricted sovereignty.
That contradiction, being recognized as a people and a nation while being denied the ability to actually live as one, is the root of why this fight continues.
Why the Fighting Hasn't Ended
Decades of negotiations, ceasefires, and peace talks have repeatedly stalled without resolving the core issues: the right of return for refugees, the status of Jerusalem, the expansion of settlements, and the borders of a Palestinian state. Until occupation ends and Palestinians are granted full sovereignty and self determination, the underlying cause of the conflict remains unresolved, regardless of how many temporary ceasefires are reached.
This is not a conflict between two equal militaries. It is a struggle between an occupying power and a people fighting to remain on, and reclaim, their own land.
